Age of Extinction is the best Transformers movie outside of Bumblebee

Yeah, you heard me. The first three suck. Suck, suck, suck. They are full of Michael Bay’s cringey, unfunny humor and outdated racial stereotypes. There is nothing redeeming about them besides seeing the actual Transformers. People say the first one was good, but I think it’s worse than Fallen. It’s got all the things that made Fallen bad except Skids and Mudflap, people just like it because it was the first live-action adaptation. And the plot goes nowhere in any of the first three, it’s just people running around doing nothing. Shia LeBoeuf is horribly unlikable, the female leads are eye candy, and Michael Bay’s cinematography makes them look like there were filmed by someone who suffers from both ADHD and Parkinson’s.

Age is better mostly because of what it lacks. There’s no douchey Shia or his hysterical parents. There’s no shaky cam smash cuts. There’s no GI bro. But it also has an actual story that progresses naturally and makes sense, people aren’t just running around from one spot to another for no reason for 90% of the film. It has actual likeable characters. Marky Mark, as douchey as he gets, is still a step up from Shia, and his daughter is great. It feels like there are actual stakes, the Autobots are on the run and outgunned for most of the movie. Lockdown is ten times more intimidating than Sentinel, Fallen, or any of the previous villains outside of Megatron. He has them on the run for the entire film, you actually feel like he could win. The biggest problem is that there aren’t any big-name Autobots left, but that’s Michael Bay’s fault for killing all the good ones off. It wasn’t enough to turn Jetfire into a joke, he had to off him in his first appearance.

Age isn’t a perfect movie, maybe an average movie at best, but it’s still better than every single one of Bay’s films.
